Why I Don't Ask You To Choose The Perfect Treatment

One of the loveliest messages I receive usually starts with an apology.

"I've been looking at your website for ages, but I don't know which ritual to book."

Sometimes they've read every description two or three times. Sometimes they've compared treatments, looked at timings and even searched Google for the difference between reflexology and massage before finally deciding to send me a message instead.

I always smile because I know exactly how they're feeling.

We spend so much of our lives trying to make the right decision that it's easy to assume booking a ritual has to be another one of them. We tell ourselves there must be a perfect answer, and if we choose the wrong thing we'll somehow miss out on what we really needed.

The truth is, I don't expect you to know.

In fact, I'd be surprised if you did.

By the time you arrive, you've already lived a whole week that I know nothing about. Perhaps work has been busier than usual. Perhaps you've been sleeping badly, looking after everybody else or simply carrying more than normal. Whatever you've reserved a fortnight ago might not be what your body is asking for when you actually walk through the door.

That's one of the reasons I've never liked the idea of working from a script.

Of course every ritual has its own shape and purpose, but they're never rigid.

If I think you'd benefit from spending longer on your scalp, your feet or simply allowing a little more stillness, then that's what we'll do. If your shoulders don't need another twenty minutes of firm pressure but your breathing tells me your whole system needs to slow down first, then I'll follow that instead.

I've always believed that the booking is simply where we begin.

The real work starts when we meet.

I know what you've reserved.

I don't yet know what you'll need.

That isn't because the rituals don't matter. They do. It's because you're not the same woman every time you visit, and I don't think your care should pretend that you are.

So if you've ever found yourself hovering over the booking page wondering whether you've chosen the right ritual, I'd gently encourage you not to overthink it.

Choose the one that feels closest to what you're looking for today.

I'll take care of the rest.

That's part of my job.

Sometimes the hardest decision isn't choosing a ritual. It's deciding you're worth making time for.
